As you may know, the BC government has committed the necessary funding to rebuild Handsworth Secondary School, and the project is already well underway. The planned timeline for the new school is ambitious – the goal is occupancy in August 2021, which would put our current Cleveland grade 4 students starting their grade 8 year in the new high school!

An architecture firm has been selected for the project, and a Capital Project Steering Committee has been established to provide feedback and suggestions for the new school design. Given the target occupancy date, things are moving very quickly and there is a very short timeline for the design process.

Now is the time for Cleveland parents to weigh in on what kind of high school our children will attend! Will there be a dedicated space for performing arts – dance, theatre, band, strings? What kind of outdoor spaces will be available – garden plots, outdoor classrooms? What amenities do you want for athletics – something more than a gravel field (grass, or even artificial turf), outdoor basketball courts, a track? Did you know that NONE of these things are a given? If these topics are important to you and your family, this is your chance to have your voice heard by the Steering Committee.

Please come to the next Cleveland PAC meeting to learn more about the Handsworth rebuild project, including how parents can have input in the design process. We hope to see you on Tuesday, April 24, 7pm in the Cleveland library. If you are unable to attend the meeting but would like to engage further on this topic, please reach out to Cleveland PAC at: chair@clevelandpac.com
