Dear Parents,

Students currently in Grade 4-6 will have a wonderful opportunity to register for the Band Program in the upcoming school year. The program in North Vancouver is considered one of the best programs in British Columbia. The support and cooperation of each school’s parents, staff and administration continue to bring students and parents together to enjoy learning and playing music in our community.

This week your child had an opportunity to watch Instrumental Demos presented by Tom Lee Music and tried some wind and brass instruments. Prior to the demos there was a short information session during which students were handed out Instrument Selection Sheet and FAQs handout to take home and discuss with their parents. Please take a moment to go over these brochures, fill out the instrument choices and do not hesitate to contact me with any questions about the program and registration. You will find these brochures attached to this message. Please return the Instrument Selection Sheet and the Beginning Band Survey to the office; this is very helpful in planning for the next year’s band classes.

The band members have the following concert opportunities throughout the year:

-School concerts
-Zone concert (Celebrating elementary and high school band programs within your family of schools).
-North Vancouver School District Band Festival (Continuing Band and Strings students).
-Honour Band playing with the Vancouver Symphony (every other year, continuing students only).

The band program offers students the opportunity to learn an instrument and increase musical skills beyond the classroom. Playing in the school band also teaches social skills and a commitment to the challenges of learning a new skill. Educational research suggests that learning a musical instrument facilitates learning in others areas of the academic curriculum. In addition, playing in an ensemble such as the band fosters friendships, discipline and leadership.

Students are given 2 periods of instruction each week. We anticipate publishing the schedule in late June. Over the last three years the schedule has not changed much. For more information about the rehearsal time at your school, please contact me.

The cost for the band program works out to approximately $46.00 per month or approximately $5.50 per lesson. Your registration fee includes approximately 40 hours of instruction and performance opportunities for your child.
